The Difference Between Mercy and Grace

Mercy: Withholding deserved punishment.

Grace: Giving of undeserved blessing.

Ephesians 2:4-7,

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

Out of God’s love, mercy and grace we’ve been given three things:

  1. Made alive with Christ (I’m a new person!).
  2. Raised up with Christ (I have new power!).
  3. Seated with Christ in the heavenly realms (From the grave to the throne room!).

These verbs are all past tense. These are not things that will happen. We are already there! The transforming change of perspective comes as you begin to see things as God sees them. All we see is here and now but God also sees the there and then at the same time.
