Simple: God commands us over 50 times in Scripture to sing His praise. He wants us to do more than declare it. He wants us to sing it. And because God is infinitely wise and loving, His commands are always for our benefit, even if we don’t see why.
But WHY does he command it? What does it accomplish? What does it do?
- Singing helps us to remember God’s word. If the Word of Christ is to dwell in us deeply, we have to remember it. And that’s just what singing helps us do.
- Singing helps us to respond to God’s grace. Music is an emotional language. It’s meant to affect us, to move us. In Scripture the emotion most often connected with singing is joy.
- Singing helps us to reflect God’s glory. The glory God receives through our songs actually goes beyond the words we sing. Singing together glorifies God because all three persons of the Trinity sing. Check out Zephaniah 3:17, Hebrews 2:12, and Ephesians 5:18-19! That’s why we often sense God’s presence in a more pronounced way when we sing together.
