You know, so many Americans idolize celebrities who sing, play sports, act, or dance with excellence. If you excel in the arts or athletics you will find a following. I have no problem with that. But some times we forget the real heroes in our lives. These are the people who go to work everyday to make our lives better. Men and women who serve as first responders to emergencies. Men and women who teach our children. Men and women who serve in their vocations so that we are served with the things we take for granted…light bulbs, groceries, etc.
And then there is another level of “stardom” in my eyes. These are the people who take Jesus’ teaching of love one another so seriously that they sacrifice their time, their energy, and even their health to help others, regardless if that’s part of their “job” or not. I know many of you who sacrificed much to take care of an aging parent or ill spouse. When I see you do those things you become a hero to me! You aren’t an artist. YOU are a WORK OF ART, made by God’s workmanship.
My friend, Steve Flairty, who attends our 11:05am service, has written some excellent books on “ordinary people doing extraordinary things.” His books, “Kentucky’s Everyday Heroes” (volumes 1 and 2) are inspirational and are better (in my opinion) then any Chicken Soup for the Soul book. While Steve’s stories are indeed extraordinary and certainly well worth your time to read, I wish you could SEE the stories I get to see lived out daily by the people of FCC.
